Fall Planting

I’m so excited!!! I ordered some heirloom organic seeds from Seed Savers Exchange and they arrived today. I’ve learned that here in coastal Georgia, a fall crop can be planted in August. Last year, I didn’t have great luck with this, but I’m determined, so giving it another try. I thought about where I might have gone wrong last year and have an idea. I tend to get so excited about growing things that I try to grow too much and end up crowding too much into a small space. This year, I decided to stick to only a few vegetables and really try to focus on what each needs. So how does a person decide on only a few things to grow when there are like a zillion to choose from?

My first thought was to grow kale because we LOVE kale, but since we can buy organic kale for 99 cents at our local grocery store, I figured I should try to grow some other items that are more expensive to purchase. Last year, I did have good luck with one thing – Swiss chard. So, that was at the top of my list. We also love broccoli and the kids had so much fun this summer growing it with their Grampa, I figured this wasworth a try as well. The other item I decided to plant is zucchini. I really like zucchini and if you can get it to grow, a few seeds usually yield a lot. The downside to this is that I’ve tried planting zucchini before and had little success. We’ll try following the spacing instructions this time and see what happens. I found a nice sunny spot to plant them in, so I hope they’ll be happy plants and produce lots of squash. With any luck, we’ll be making Zucchini Bread in 45-65 days. YUM!
