How to Make a Sheer Drawstring Bag

small drawstring bag

This cute little drawstring bag can be used to hold all kinds of trinkets, but I think it is most useful for holding small jewelry gifts. You can make this bag from any fabric, but to get the traditional look above, try to find a sheer material – old sheer curtains are perfect for this.

You’ll need a piece of sheer fabric measuring 11″x4″ and 2 pieces of 1/4 inch ribbon that is 15″ long. Cut the fabric with pinking sheers to keep it from fraying.

This requires minimal sewing skills although it’s easiest to do on a machine. Each short end is folded over and stitched down in 2 lines to form a pocket that the ribbon will go through (think the top of a curtain where the rod goes through). Once this is done on both ends, fold right sides together and stitch up each side, making sure not to sew the folded over part, because this is where the ribbon goes. Turn right-side out. Thread the ribbon through the pocket on each side, tying one on each side. Pull the ribbon tight to draw together. For detailed, step by step, watch the video below. I find that sewing is one task that is difficult to explain on paper and easier to understand with a video. 🙂
